Use the SET (Scanner Enhancement Technology) toolbar to enhance your images.
The toolbar can be floated in the Image Enhancement window. Some tools work on the Primary image, some on the OCR image, some on both. Whenever you choose a tool, the image it acts on (primary or OCR) will appear, if it is not already displayed.
The following tools are accessible on the toolbar; their usage is detailed as follows:
P - affects Primary image only.
O - affects OCR image only.
PO - can be applied to either the Primary or OCR image (or both)
P+O - a single action is applied to both the Primary and OCR image.
P/O - affects both images.
WH - applies to whole images only.
AR - can be applied to selected image areas.
The first group of tools performs basic operations:
Pointer (F5) - the Pointer is a neutral tool carrying out different operations under different circumstances (for example, to pick a color for the Fill operation, or to catch the deskew line.) PO.
Zoom (F6) - click the tool then use the left mouse button to zoom in on your image (primary or OCR) or the right mouse button to zoom out. You can also use the mouse wheel for zooming in and out - even in the inactive view. In the active view the "+" and "-" buttons serve the same purpose. P+O.
Select Area (F7) - click this, then on a tool that can work on a page area (marked AR) and draw your selection on the image. Image enhancement tools by default work on the whole page. PO. AR.
Selection has three modes (in the View or shortcut menu):

Normal - draw one rectangular area on the page, and move or resize it.

Additive - draw multiple areas on the page or connect areas by drawing overlapping rectangles.

Subtractive - cut out parts from your existing selections by drawing new overlapping areas.
Primary/OCR Image - click this tool to switch between the primary and the OCR image in the active view. This tool is accessible in the View menu. Primary images can be of any image mode, while an OCR image is its black and white version, generated purely for OCR purposes. P/O. WH.
Synchronize Views - click this tool to zoom and scroll the inactive view to the same zoom value and scroll position as the active view. This tool is accessible in the View menu. To make the inactive view dynamically follow the focus of the active one, choose Keep Synchronized in the View or shortcut menu. PO. WH.
The remaining SET tools allow you to modify image contents:
Brightness and Contrast - click this tool to adjust the brightness and contrast settings of your primary image or a selected part of it. Use the sliders in the tool area to achieve the desired effect. P. AR.
Hue / Saturation / Lightness - click this tool then use the sliders to modify the hue, saturation and lightness of your primary image. P. AR.
Crop - to use only a part of your image, click the Select Area tool, then the Crop tool and select the area to keep – the rest of the image will be removed. Cropping is applied to both the primary and the OCR image. P+O. WH > AR.
Rotate - click this tool to rotate (by 90, 180 or 270 degrees) and/or flip your whole image. Rotating is applied to both the primary and the OCR image. P+O. WH.
Despeckle - click this tool to remove stray dots from your OCR image. Both "before" and "after" views show the OCR image. Choose from four intensity levels. You can also use this tool not to remove noise from the page but to strengthen letter outlines: to do this mark the checkbox Inverse despeckling. O. AR.
OCR Brightness - use this tool to set Brightness and Contrast of your OCR image using a slider. The left panel shows the primary image, the right panel the OCR image. O. AR.
Dropout color - click this tool and select Red, Green, Blue or a color you choose from in the primary image with the Select area tool (draw a rectangle containing a piece of the background and the color you want dropped). All parts of the primary image with this color will be set transparent in the OCR image. The primary image appears on the left, the OCR image on the right. This is typically used with color forms so only respondent data is sent to recognition. P/O. WH.
Resolution - use this tool to decrease the resolution of your primary image in percentages. Note that you cannot adjust a resolution higher than that of the original one. It does not affect the OCR image, since values below 300 dpi yield lower OCR accuracy. P. WH.
Deskew - sometimes pages get crooked when you scan them. Use this to manually deskew both the primary and the OCR image together. Give a numerical value or choose the Pointer tool to catch the deskew line. Auto-deskewing during image loading can be specified in the Process panel of the Options dialog box. P+O. WH.
3D Deskew - when this tool is activated, the 3D skew of the image will be detected and a grid will be placed on the image. You can adjust this grid by mouse cursor movements to make the grid lines parallel with the appropriate text elements of a photographed document. When this is done, the 3D Deskew transformation can be applied to the image. This 3D Deskew transformation can also be saved as part of an Image enhancement template. P+O. WH.
Fill - use this tool to apply uniform coloring to the primary or the OCR image or both. To apply the fill color to a selected area, first use the Select Area tool to define the area. Then choose a color from the palette provided or pick a color from the left page image. Switch to the Pointer tool if you do not see the picking cursor. Choose which image(s) should take the fill and click Apply. In the OCR image the fill color will become either white or black. PO. AR.
