Verifying text

After performing OCR, you can compare any part of the recognized text against the corresponding part of the original image, to verify that the text was recognized correctly. Verifying text also functions for the Asian languages.

To do this:	Use this:

The verifier tool is in the Formatting toolbar. The verifier can also be controlled from the View menu.

To display the verifier toolbar:

Here you can see an example of the dynamic verifier in the Text Editor:

Click to modify the size of the text context. This tool is available only for the dynamic verifier. You can define how much context you want to see. Choices are: one word, three words (current and neighbors) and the whole image line. In our example Three Words is the current selection.

To modify the size of the text context:

Click as many times as required to get the desired size.
Press Alt + Num * as many times as required.
Select the appropriate Verifier menu item from the View menu.

You should proofread and verify texts before doing large-scale editing. If you cut and paste large blocks of text, the links between text and image may be disturbed.

You can use the OmniPage text-to-speech facility to have the recognized text read aloud as another way of verifying text. You can hear the text letter-by-letter, word-by-word, line-by-line, sentence-by-sentence or in whole pages. See Converting Text to Speech.

Suspect and non-dictionary words may be marked in the Text Editor. See Proofreading. Proofing stops only on marked words, and removes the marking as you move on. You can verify any words in the text, whether marked or not.

Turn the verifier on and use the Find Next Suspect tool or F4 to quickly verify suspect words. Use the shortcut menu to get dictionary suggestions and proofing commands.

Proofreading

After a page is recognized, the recognition results appear in the Text Editor. Proofreading starts automatically if that was requested in the Proofing panel of the Options dialog box. You can start proofing manually any time the program is not busy. The Proofreader will stop on suspected words marked with colors. Marked words are the ones that will be offered for inspection during proofing. Color markers are removed from words in the Text Editor as they are proofread.

Markers

Marking is done with red wavy underlines and dark yellow highlights. Red wavy underlines indicate both non-dictionary words and suspect words. Dark yellow highlights indicate suspect characters.

Non-dictionary words: These are words that were recognized confidently, but are not found in any active dictionary: standard, user or professional. These appear only in languages with dictionary support. To see which languages have built-in dictionaries, click here.

This is an example for a non-dictionary word:

Non-dictionary words will be marked if the Mark all non-dictionary words option on the Proofing panel was enabled. Words are likely to be marked, even if the recognition engine produced the result with high confidence. This marking will also appear on text entered or pasted into the Text Editor after recognition. If this option is turned off, proofing will stop only on suspect words, marked with red underlines and possibly dark yellow highlights.

Words with suspect characters: These are words with unrecognized characters or dictionary-approved words containing one or more characters recognized with lower confidence.

This is an example for a suspect character:

Unrecognizable characters are represented by a red reject character. (A tilde ~ is the default reject character — — define a different character in the OCR panel of the Options dialog box.)

Suspect words: These are likely to be non-dictionary words with one or more suspect characters, but may also be suspect for other reasons. Non-dictionary words recognized with high confidence by all recognition engines or appearing repeatedly in a document may not be marked red.

This is an example for a suspect word:

You can choose to show or hide the markers in the Text Editor panel of the Options dialog box. Whenever you start proofing or choose Find Next Suspect the markers are turned back on. The markers are not exported with the text, but they are saved to the OmniPage Document (even when hidden).

It is a good idea to put your name, address elements, and your most common trade, company and product names or abbreviations into a user dictionary, so they do not slow down proofing.

To proofread OCR results and correct errors:

Click the Proofread OCR button in the Standard toolbar, or choose Proofread OCR in the Tools menu.

Click Change or Change All to implement the change and move to the next suspect word. Click Add to add the changed word to the current user dictionary and move to the next suspect word.
Optionally, click More >> or resize the Proofing panel to display a thumbnail of the currently proofread page where you can see two numbers below the thumbnail. For example: 3 of 7. This means there are 7 problem words on the page, and the proofreader is currently checking the third one. Continue proofreading.
Click Close to stop proofreading.

You can switch to the Text Editor during proofing to make corrections there. Use the Resume button to restart proofing.

Click Page Ready to skip to the next page and Document Ready or Close to stop proofreading before the end of the document is reached.

If you have manually entered or pasted text after proofing, choose Recheck Current Page in the Tools menu to proof a page which has been already proofed after recognition.

If a word is hyphenated at the end of a line, the proofreader will try to join the two parts. If the word remains suspect, the image viewer will show two panes, so you can see both parts of the word. The verifier will stitch the two image parts together so you see the whole word.

Click or press F4 to find the next suspect word without displaying the Proofing panel.

If markers were hidden in the Text Editor when proofing is started or Find Next Suspect is chosen, the markers become shown and remain shown after proofing.

A page is marked with the proofed icons and on its thumbnail and in the Document Manager if proofing ran to the end of the page.

Proofing should not be used for Japanese, Chinese or Korean. Disable automatic proofing under Options / Proofing.

True Page view

The Text Editor’s Editor’s True Page formatting level retains the original layout and formatting as closely as possible.

The program detects the different page elements and places them in text, picture and table boxes, multicolumn areas or frames.

Text, picture and table boxes are simple elements, multicolumn areas and frames are more complex. A multicolumn area, enclosed by an orange border, may contain columns of flowing text, pictures and tables. A frame encloses one or more text, table and/or picture boxes. You can ungroup these complex areas (multicolumn areas and frames) and reorder the boxes.

You can also change frame, table and cell borders as well as background color for text boxes, frames and tables. Headers and footers are placed in text boxes and may be transferred to the target application. You can select options for header/footer handling in a converter options dialog box.

To ungroup a complex area:

Right-click a multicolumn area and choose Ungroup on the shortcut menu.

The grouped elements of the current multicolumn area will appear separately.

To group separate elements together:

Select the elements.
Choose Group To and the appropriate item: Frame or Multicolumn Area on the shortcut menu.

To convert an element:

Right-click an element and choose Convert To and the appropriate item: Text Box, Picture or Table on the shortcut menu.

To change border properties:

Select the items in the Text Editor and choose the appropriate submenu on the shortcut menu: Frame... or Table....

The Borders and Shading dialog box will appear where you can assign or remove borders and change line styles, width and color.

To change a background color:

Select the item and choose the appropriate submenu on the shortcut menu: Frame..., Table... or Text Box....

The Borders and Shading dialog box will appear.

Click the Shading tab and choose a color.

To change header/footer handling:

Choose Change To and the appropriate item: Header, Footer or Body Text on the shortcut menu.

True Page is usually unsuitable for viewing texts in Japanese, Chinese or Korean: prefer Formatted Text or Plain Text – – text is always displayed horizontally. In contrast to this, to reinstate vertical orientation in the target application for Japanese and Chinese, you need to use True Page or Flowing Page as the output formatting level. See Asian language recognition.

Click or choose Undo in the Edit menu to undo your last change or command. In many cases you can undo a series of changes. Use it to:

cancel recent changes to zoning one by one.
cancel recent changes in the Text Editor one by one.
cancel page deletions in the Document Manager or in thumbnails one by one.

To redo a command you have undone, choose Redo in the Edit menu. You can redo a series of undone actions.

When you rotate an image manually, any zones of the image and the recognition results are deleted, after you confirm the command. These deleted items cannot be restored by Undo.
Reading order changes can be undone. When the Change Reading Order tool is clicked, a separate undo button appears in the Text Editor ruler.

Immediate redaction done by searching can be undone to a limited extent – – practically redaction done within the last twenty or so operations can be undone. Once you leave a page or export it, the redaction is permanent.

Zone types and contents

The zone type and zone content determine how a zone will be treated during processing.

Zone Type

Each zone on a page has a zone-type setting. You can select the following zone types:

Process zone

for the automatic detection of zones. Auto-zoning will run inside the area you define a process zone. If you cover a varied area with a process zone, OmniPage may replace this with a set of smaller zones. Text will be decolumnized, tables and graphics will be detected.

Use the Text Editor views Plain Text view or Formatted Text view to see the texts decolumnized. Use True Page view to keep the text in columns.

Click the Change Reading Order tool in the Text Editor's Formatting toolbar in True Page view if the order needs to be changed.

Ignore zone

for parts of the page that you do not want processed. Ignore zones are displayed as shaded (they appear gray on white pages). They are typically drawn on a process background. Ignore zones can be placed in a template, so that a particular part of all pages in a document (such as a repeated logo or page numbering) can be excluded from recognition in just one move.

Text zone

for text areas in a single column. Use this also to cover text areas that you do not want broken into separate columns. Use this zone type also to manually zone horizontal text in Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

Vertical Asian text zone

for vertical text in Japanese or Chinese. Text direction can be auto-detected for these languages, but you can use this to force vertical handling. Do not use it for other languages. All vertical text zones should be rectangular.

Vertical left-rotated text zone

for right-rotated vertical text in non-Asian languages; see an example at the end of Drawing zones manually. In some (but not all) cases these zones can be auto-detected. This zone type cannot be used to zone vertical text in table cells – – only auto-zoning can do that.

Vertical right-rotated text zone

for right-rotated vertical text in non-Asian languages. The information given above also applies here.

Table zone

for text or numeric areas with data in rows and columns that you want treated as a table. Table gridlines can be automatically detected during recognition, or can be placed manually before recognition. All tables are displayed after recognition in the Text Editor with grids. You can edit the gridlines. The item Tables in the export converter options allows you to specify how the table data should be exported, for instance in grids or converted to tab separated columns.

Graphic zone

for photos, drawings, signatures and areas of text that you want to retain as a picture in the Text Editor. These embedded graphic areas can be exported with the document to target applications that support graphics. The Retain graphics export converter option should be selected in this case. Graphics can also be copied to Clipboard.

Form zone

for forms that you want recognized so they become fillable after export. You can edit the form elements in the Text Editor and then export them in pdf, rtf, html or xsn (Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003) format. Form zones are supported only in OmniPage Professional.

To change the zone type of an existing zone

Right-click inside the zone, then select Zone Type and the appropriate item from the shortcut menu.

To define a zone type for a new zone

Select the appropriate zone drawing tool from the Image toolbar, then draw the zone.

Zone Content

All text and table zones on a page also have a zone content setting. The zone content specifies the characters OmniPage looks for within a zone during processing. You can select Alphanumeric or Numeric as the zone content setting.

For example, if a particular zone only contains numbers and mathematical signs, you can specify the contents of that zone to be Numeric. OmniPage will only generate solutions containing numbers and number-related punctuation for that zone during recognition.

To change the zone content

Right-click inside the zone, then select Zone Content and the appropriate item from the shortcut menu.

OmniPage assigns a zone type to each zone created by auto-zoning. It also assigns a zone content setting to text zones. You do not need to change the zone properties unless you want to modify the way elements on the page will be handled during reprocessing.

Create a converter for legal documents with the Retain pleading numbers check box enabled or disabled according to your needs.
Create a workflow for legal documents with Legal Pleading selected in the Recognize Images panel under Layout description.

To paste pages to an empty document

Load your document.
Select the pages to be copied either in the Thumbnails panel, or in the Document Manager panel.
Select Copy from the Edit menu or from a shortcut menu.
Click the New button on the Standard toolbar or select New from the File menu.
Select Paste from the Edit menu.

About handling multiple documents

OmniPage 16 introduces the ability to handle multiple documents at the same time.

Multiple document handling allows you to

Create or open more than one document at a time.
Run a workflow on one document and work manually on another.
Run workflows on more than one document at the same time.
Copy or move pages between documents by the Copy and Paste commands or by drag-and-drop. For more details see Page operations between documents.

Showing and hiding the Character Map

The character map serves for easy insertion of non-keyboard characters. It appears as a ribbon in the Text Editor and in the Proofreader dialog box. In other cases it will be displayed in the Character Map dialog box. Grayed characters on the character map indicate that they are not enabled for recognition, but they can be inserted.

You can use the character map

- during editing and proofreading,
- when training characters,
- entering additional characters for recognition,
- changing reject character.

To display the character map in the Text Editor:

Click in the Formatting toolbar to display the character map. Click the arrows to display non-visible parts of the character map or
Select Character Map from the View menu, then Show.

To display the character map in the Train Character dialog box:

Click beside the text box.

To display the character map in the OCR panel of the Options dialog box:

Going to pages

The Page Image panel and Text Editor can display the current page in a document. Numbered miniature images of each page in a document can be displayed in the Thumbnails panel. All pages in a document are presented in a table in the Document Manager. The current page is shown with an "eye" icon both in the thumbnails and in the Document Manager.

You can change to another page by doing one of the following:

Click the thumbnail of the page you want to display (scroll if necessary).
Click the leftmost icon area or double-click a page row in the Document Manager.

Resizing a page view

You can resize (enlarge or reduce) the current page displayed in the Page Image panel or in the Text Editor. The Standard toolbar has a zoom selection box that shows the zoom value for the area that is currently active.

To zoom in or out on a page view:

Click in the area you want to enlarge or reduce to make it active.
Select a zoom value from the selection box in the Standard toolbar.

Or, choose Zoom in the View menu and select a size option in the sub-menu.

Or, click the right mouse button in the area you want to resize and select a size option in the shortcut menu.

The page resizes as specified.
You can also resize the original image with the zoom in or zoom out buttons in the Image toolbar.

OmniPage offers two dynamic zoom values: Page Width and Whole Page. These may change the zoom factor when you resize an area, so that the whole page width or the whole page always remains visible.

Closing a document

Choose Close in the File menu to close a document.

You are prompted to save your document if you have not saved it or have modified it since the last save. Whenever you close a document or switch to another one when unsaved training data exists, a dialog box appears allowing you to save it.

Save a document as an OmniPage Document file (*.opd) if you want to reopen it in OmniPage again. If you do not want to do this, check that you have all the export you need from the document before you close it.

If you closed all your documents in OmniPage, you must click New before starting a workflow, manual or automatic processing.

Training files

A training file contains a set of character shapes each associated with an OCR solution. Training data, both generated by IntelliTrain and created by manual training, can be saved to a training file for future use to improve accuracy. When a training file is loaded, these stored shapes are compared with problem shapes found on pages being recognized. The assigned solutions will be applied when appropriate. Any number of training files can be saved, only one can be loaded at a time. Training files can be edited. You can delete unsuitably trained shapes or change the character(s) linked to a given character shape.

OmniPage is a powerful, pre-trained OCR product. For most recognition work, using a training file is unnecessary. Training files are of most use for a set of long documents with text printed in an unusual or styled typeface. Inspect training data and delete misformed character shapes unlikely to be repeated in the documents before saving the data to file.

Saving training to file, loading, editing and unloading training files are all done in the Training Files dialog box. This displays all training files created by the program or added from elsewhere. When you save a training file it is by default saved to the Training subfolder, but you can select a different location, including network drives. This allows you to make your training files available to other users. When a training file is selected, its path is displayed.

You can add a previously removed training file or import a training file, for instance from a network location. You can remove a training file from the list.

To display the Training Files dialog box:

Choose Training File... from the Tools menu.

To save training data to a training file:

Select the appropriate item under ‘File ‘File name’ ’ in the Training Files dialog box.

[unsaved] [current] appears when training was done.

Click Save and enter a name in the Save Training File dialog box that appears.

To add training data to an existing training file:

Load a training file before training.
Do either automatic or manual training.
Click Save in the Training Files dialog box.

To edit a training file:

Select a training file in the Training Files dialog box.
Click Edit...

The Edit Training dialog box appears. An asterisk in the title bar indicates that there are unsaved training data.

Examine the character shapes and the OCR solutions assigned to them.

- Double-click a rectangle to change its assigned character value. Key in the new character value and press Enter. Changed values appear red.
- Click a rectangle to select a character.
- Press Delete to delete it; it turns gray.
- Press Delete again to restore it.

Click OK to confirm all changes.

Characters marked deleted are really deleted at this point.

To add a training file to the list:

Click Add... in the Training Files dialog box.
Accept the default folder or select the folder where your training file is located.
Select the training file and click OK.

The training file will appear in the Training Files dialog box.

Click Close.

To remove a training file from the list:

Select a training file in the Training Files dialog box.
Click Remove.

The selected training file will be removed from the list but it will not be deleted from the disk.

To load a training file:

Select a training file in the Training Files dialog box.
Click Set As Current.

The Embed in OPD dialog box appears.
Enter a name, then click OK.
Close the Training Files dialog box.
Process your document and save it to the file type OmniPage Document.

When you load an OPD with an embedded training file, it appears in the list of training files as [embedded]. You can edit it. You can extract and save it.

Only one training file can be loaded at a time, but more than one training file can be embedded in an OPD file, to make it easier to move training files between computers.

Manual training

Manual training allows user-selected characters to be trained.

Most characters need not be trained. As a rule, you should train character shapes which are repeatedly misrecognized or unrecognized. You can also train uncommon characters and symbols. Typically you train one character, the maximum you can train is about 5 characters. You can train only one word at a time. Use only a few pages to train characters. You can apply training made on the current page to the already existing pages of a document. You may train in order to make a training file to give greater accuracy and shorten proofing time on future documents.

Do not train individual errors caused by accidental spots on the image. You should not train character shapes unlikely to occur again.

The purpose of training is not to teach the program to read characters from non-supported languages or alphabets. Japanese, Chines and Korean characters should not be trained.

To train characters manually:

Right-click on the character in the Text Editor and choose Train Character... in the shortcut menu or select Train Character... from the Tools menu.

The Train Character dialog box appears.

Enter the correct character in the edit box. Click to display the Character Map to insert characters from the map.
Unwanted or missing fragments of desired character shapes are editable by clicking on them in the zoom window. Blue colored shape indicates the active shape to be trained, yellow shapes show the neighboring parts. If you click on a yellow-colored image it will become blue and vice versa. The colors indicate which part of a character shape will be involved in the training and which will be excluded.

Click Train.

The program examines the rest of the page. If characters with similar shapes are found on the same page, the Check Training dialog box appears. (If there are no similar shapes found on the page, the dialog box will not appear.)

Check if all proposed changes are correct. Some might be incorrect due to the similar shapes of some letters e.g. ‘b’ ‘b’ and ‘h’ ‘h’ , ‘q’ ‘q’ and ‘g’. ‘g’. You have the following choices:

- If all words are correct, click on OK.
  The proposed changes will be made.
- If only a few proposals are incorrect, select an incorrect word and click on Re-Train...
  The Train Character dialog box appears where you can re-train that single occurrence.
  Repeat the step as required, click OK when finished.
- If many proposals are incorrect, click Cancel.
  That training will be abandoned.

To apply training to existing pages in a document:

The Apply Training dialog box appears when you leave a page on which training data was generated.

Select the appropriate option: from current page on, or to all existing pages.

Automatic training

Automatic training, called IntelliTrain, takes input from the corrections a user makes during proofing. The program remembers the character shape and the changed solution for this shape and searches other similar character shapes in the document.

To have training data generated, Enable IntelliTrain must be selected in the Proofing panel of the Options dialog box. You must also make changes as you proof text, either through the OCR Proofreader dialog box or using a shortcut menu on a suspect word. Other editing does not generate training data. Even proofing changes do not always generate training data – IntelliTrain decides which changes to conserve.

Let’s see an example how IntelliTrain works.

OmniPage might interpret this bitmap as ‘bcnefit’. During proofing you change ‘bcnefit’ to ‘benefit’. IntelliTrain remembers the shape of this problem character and the rule: this is not ‘c’, this is an ‘e’. IntelliTrain searches other similar character shapes in the document and considers changing them:

Training

Training is the process of changing the OCR solutions assigned to character shapes in the image. It serves to improve OCR accuracy on long and similar styled documents. It could be worth training any repeatedly misrecognized, unrecognized or uncommon character or symbol. Automatic training, called IntelliTrain, derives training data from the corrections a user makes while proofing text from the Text Editor. Manual training allows user-selected characters to be trained after recognition.

All training can be saved to a training file for future use and loaded whenever needed. A training file contains a set of character shapes each associated with an OCR solution. When a training file is loaded, these stored shapes are compared with problem shapes found on pages being recognized. The assigned solutions will be applied when appropriate.

Training data can exist and be used without it being saved to a training file. Unsaved training data is conserved inside an OmniPage Document. If you do not save your document as an OPD file and do want the training data in a file, you must save it before you close the document. Whenever you close a document or switch to another one when unsaved training data exists, a dialog box appears allowing you to save it.

Training cannot be applied to Japanese, Korean or Chinese. Do not do manual training, and before recognizing these languages, ensure than IntelliTrain is disabled in the Proofing panel of the Options dialog box. Check also that no training file is loaded, since Asian OCR would risk compromising its contents.

To extract form data

Open the Workflow Assistant to create a workflow.
Enter a name for your workflow in the Create New Workflow panel, then click Next.
In the Load Files panel, specify the file or folder names for the filled forms or ask for prompting. You can also set preprocessing options.
Click Next.
Choose Extract Form Data as second step instead of Recognize Images. To do this, click the strip at the bottom of the Recognize Images workflow step and choose Extract Form Data from the list of the currently available steps.
Choose settings for the Extract Form Data step:

Choose your form template file. This must be an active PDF form (either filled or unfilled). It must present a good representation of all forms to be subsequently processed. It must have the same number of pages as the subsequent forms, including the effects of page ranges.
Select a recognition language, and if desired, dictionaries. Do not choose Japanese, Chinese or Korean.
You can exclude the filling instruction pages – – if any – – by specifying a page range.

Click Next.
In the Save panel, select the saving options: Create one file for all pages is the recommended file option, but other options are offered. Open it in Microsoft Excel or import it into a database.

The Form Data Extraction step can be selected as the first workflow step. This is useful if you want to preview the forms. After loading the forms into OmniPage you can reorder them or use SET tools. Then start the workflow and choose Process all pages in the Start Workflow dialog box.

About Form Data Extraction

Form data extraction lets you collect data from a set of filled forms for further processing in databases or spreadsheets. Form data extraction is done by a workflow step in OmniPage 17.

The layout and location of form elements is defined by a form template file. The forms to be processed must be filled by computer or similar machine and not handwritten. The output is a comma-separated value (csv) file that can be opened as a table in a spreadsheet program. Each form element becomes a table column and the data from each form is presented in a single row. The form elements are typically fillable fields, check boxes and option buttons.

Form template files

The form template must be an active, non-image PDF form that correctly presents the form elements to be encountered in the forms to be processed. It can be either filled or unfilled. It can be a multi-page form and a page range can be specified to eliminate non-form pages such as any containing filling instructions. See below on how a page range is interpreted in different types of processing.

You can use OmniPage Professional or a PDF Editor such as Nuance PDF Converter Professional if you need to make a template file yourself. See About form creation, and save the form to the PDF file type.

Setting up the workflow

The Workflow Assistant must be used. Typically this contains three steps: A Load Files step, the Extract Form Data step and a saving step. See Extract Form Data in Workflow Assistant.

Processing filled PDF files

This includes all PDF flavors except PDF Image. The PDF files can be either static or active. In this case each form must be located in a separate PDF file. If a page range is chosen for the template, the same page range is applied to all PDF files being processed.

Processing filled forms saved as image files

This includes all image file formats supported by OmniPage and includes PDF Image. In this case the files to be processed must contain the number of pages defined by the template file page range. For example, if the template page range is 2-4, each form to be processed must contain three pages.

Each form to be processed can be in a separate file, but it is also possible process forms in single multi-page image files. In the above example, pages 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, etc. will be regarded as separate forms.

Processing filled scanned forms

Filled forms are best scanned using an ADF. Scan only the filled form pages that are specified in the form template (including its page range, if any). When scanning such a pile of multi-page forms, separator sheets are not needed.

Grouping form objects

Two form object types can be grouped: checkbox or circle text. Grouping objects together serves the purpose of making them mutually exclusive, i.e. only one object of a group can be selected when the form is filled in. When form data is sent from a filled form, the value of the selected object is transmitted as the value for the group.

To group checkboxes:

Select a checkbox you want to be grouped with other checkboxes.
Select Form Object Properties from the shortcut menu.
Select or type in the name that will be used for all checkboxes within the same group.
Continue selecting checkboxes and changing their names into a common name until all the checkboxes within a group have the same name.

You can group circle text objects in the same way.

OmniPage Professional uses the Logical Form RecognitionTM technology to let you create active (electronically fillable) forms from scanned forms or static (flat) forms saved as image files.

Use OmniPage Professional with LFR to scan unfilled forms, so it detects and places the form elements. These can be modified in the Text Editor, by adding, moving, modifying or deleting elements; the form can then be saved to a variety of formats: PDF, RTF, HTML or XSN (Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 format) using the True Page formatting level. These files (except HTML) can then be distributed as fillable forms. HTML supports only static forms.

To process one or more pages, or a whole document as a form, choose Form in the Layout Description drop-down list

for automatic processing: before scanning or loading the image file,
for manual processing: before recognizing the image.

To process part of a page as a form, import the image, draw a form zone over the required part, then send it to recognition. Form zones can be rectangular or irregular.

The detected form elements will be displayed in the Text Editor. Click True Page to enable the editing of form elements. To mark fillable form fields with yellow highlight, select Highlight fillable fields in the Text Editor panel of the Options dialog box.

Use the two toolbars: Form Drawing and Form Arrangement to make modifications and produce a fillable form. You can create form elements only on page parts that were processed as forms.

Defining folders for finding workflow files

This topic relates only to OmniPage Professional.

For barcode cover page jobs, you may have to define one or more folders, possibly at network locations, that should be searched to find the workflow files (extension .xwf) referenced by the barcodes. If you do not add further folders, only the default workflow folder on the local computer will be searched:

under Vista

Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\ScanSoft\OmniPage17\WorkFlow

under Windows XP
Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\ScanSoft\OmniPage17\Workflow

To define further folders for finding workflow files:

In Batch Manager, select Tools > Options.
On the General panel, click Add and browse for a folder to add folders to the folder list.

Select a folder, then click OK.

The selected folder will be displayed under Location for workflow files. The program will search all listed folders for workflow files.
Click OK.
Use the Workflow dialog box from the Tools menu to import workflow files from network locations for non-barcode processing.
