Dragon saves the day (and the MFA)!

When I hurt my left arm in a work-related accident in 2002, just after I had been accepted into graduate school for writing, I'd never even heard of the Dragon. During my first semester, the chronic pain increased along with my need to type. Eventually, I couldn't type enough and had to call up friends and dictate to them. I am a chronic reviser, though, so that experiment was an entertaining, time-consuming not-quite-success. Then I did a lot of research and discovered the Dragon.

It's not an exaggeration to say that the Dragon saved my graduate school career. With its help, I was able to eventually complete a 450 page thesis. Thank you, Dragon, for my MFA; I couldn't have done it without you.

Hi my name is Raymond Wood and I use Dragon every day. I was involved in a more cycle accident the day after Thanksgiving 2008; I paralyzed my right arm and broke my right leg so bad that I will have to walk with a cane the rest of my life. My Dragon is running as soon as I start my computer, typing with one hand can be very taxing; Dragon has made it possible for me to stay in college.

I go to college online, while working I was only able to go half-time, after the accident I didn't think I would be able to keep up. I started looking around for speech software and found Dragon. I took a huge chance considering I have a wife and three children, the price of the software was difficult for us to manage, but in my life it was absolutely worth the price. Not only have I been able to keep up in school, but I'm also able to take more classes. College is more important than ever to me, for this is the only way I can see to give me a chance to be able to support my family again.

I also use Dragon to run my computer, I use it in everything from writing e-mail to surfing the web, it has given me the advantage and made it possible for me to open up new worlds for myself. I want to thank the makers of Dragon for the work they've done, the possibilities this software has given me, to work past my disability and be able to open up new avenues for my life and my family

Dragon Naturally Speaking has absolutely changed my life! I am what you might call a cyber professor, I teach Humanities and Anthropology to students around the world entirely online. In order to make a living this way, I have to teach a lot of classes. With the volume of students I teach, I read a lot of e-mails, grade a lot of papers, and facilitate many discussion boards every week. When my classroom-based colleagues ask me what my secret is, I tell them quite simply that it is Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Dragon allows me to effectively and efficiently provide my students with the attention and feedback they deserve. It works with all of my learning management systems, and I can navigate the web with ease. Of course, Dragon Naturally Speaking has been invaluable in preparing manuscripts and articles for publication. If my coursework were not made so much easier by Dragon, I would hardly have time to do any publishing at all.

But Dragon Naturally Speaking, for me, is not just about doing my job faster and better, it is about promoting a new kind of academic lifestyle, one where the classroom is the world for both my students and myself. I would estimate that since I started using Dragon NaturallySpeaking I have seen my income go up by at least a third, my stress levels have dropped dramatically, and best of all my students get better, fresher feedback. I am able to earn a decent living in an academic job market that has left many of my colleagues under employed and with little hope. In addition, I can work from where ever I want, and enjoy a great deal of mobility. Dragon NaturallySpeaking allows me to confidently promote the viability of online teaching to people who may otherwise fear dim prospects of employment in today's tough job market.

Using Dragon in the Classroom

As an online educator, I had a colleague tell me about Dragon Naturally Speaking a few years ago. I was always in awe of how fast she could turn around a graded paper, or dash off a note to a student in AIM or e-mail. So, I decided to give it a try for myself. I have found that my feedback to students is more comprehensive, my discussion posts richer, and my e-mail responses more direct through the use of speech recognition software.

Before using this software I would try and limit my comments in papers because after 50 papers or so my hands were just too tired to give them more than the bare feedback relative to what the problem is. Now, with naturally speaking I can write feedback comments that are specific to that student without costing me any additional time. I have found that it works in most online software applications.

Also I have utilized it to take part of a Biblical education volunteer work that I have been engaged for 21 years. I use it in drafting letters that I need to send out to the community - and now I am trying to do it in a foreign language, Arabic!

My Masters Thesis Disaster

While trying to complete my Masters Degree at Liberty University I found myself working 65 plus hours as a new COO of a mental health organization and had to find time to somehow complete my Masters Thesis in order to graduate on time. My old method was that I would complete several rough drafts and rough those drafts even more before I was able to complete the final draft before having to get my wife to have mercy on me and type it for me. I had not taken typing in school (I was/am a hunter & pecker). This process usually took me about three weeks but I only had two weeks left to get it all done and submitted before the end of the semester. I don't need to tell you how stressed out I was; there was no light at the end of the tunnel it seemed and I knew that I could not sacrifice work hours because we had just opened a new office while at the same time preparing for National Accreditation. I was at wits end and was even beginning to show signs of depression due to the long hours of work and trying to work on my paper. My family life and work was beginning to suffer due to lack of sleep and stress and then I was checking my e-mail one day and saw an add for Dragon Naturally Speaks, which really caught my attention. I began to feel a sense of hope so I did more research on the product and even called and chatted with someone in customer services that explained how the program worked and how easy it was to setup and use. I was suddenly feeling like I actually could get my paper done but still was somewhat skeptical because I didn't want to build myself up for a huge let down if this Dragon Naturally Speaks program did not work as advertised (was it tooooo good to be true?) but I said "What the heck! What do I have to lose but the price of the program", which was an introductory sales price from Office Depot.

Long story short, I bought the program and installed it and went through the training sessions, which took about 45 minutes total before I felt comfortable enough to begin dictating with it (I was using version 8). I was able to take my final rough draft and dictate my Masters Thesis with correct citations and full bibliography in four hours with only about 10% errors, which were corrected easily and mostly instantly. The total process took me six days from rough draft to final Masters Thesis completion, in fact It ended up being over 40 pages including graphs, statistics and charts. While dictating I was able to expand upon my thoughts from the rough draft and dictate them into the paper.

Results: I got an A and was able to graduate in time and I owe it all to Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaks.

I have since used Dragon Naturally Speaks Preferred 9 to complete my Ph. D. in Health Care Management and Policy and continue to use it daily.

P.S. I now use Dragon Naturally Speaks Preferred at work and most of my staff have seen me use it and have since purchased it for their use in documenting therapy notes and other documentation for work and personal use. We all especially like being able to dictate into the digital recorder and uploading it into Dragon where it is immediately transcribed (preferred version 9).

Dragon NaturallySpeaking has changed my academic, professional, and personal life.

I was introduced to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking software while working on a master degree in piano pedagogy. I am a pianist and I do other work with my hands. I was basically self-taught during my early piano study which means I developed bad technique on the instrument. While completing my under graduate studies in jazz piano I was diagnosed with tendonitis in my right hand, from over practice with bad technique. It was a nightmare for me, because I could not use my hand to type nor to write. I managed to improve my piano technique by attending various workshops, such as the Taubman technique and taking private lessons with classically trained piano instructors. But I was still very limited, because in this age of technology, it is incredibly sad to not be able to use the computer. My hand therapist suggested that I wear a splint, when I type or write; or I needed to relearn how to type and write with correct technique (kind of hard to do). The splint did not solve the problem and I didn't have a chance to be retrained; I only managed to write with my left hand but the right hand was still hurting. I tried typing only my with my left, then my left shoulder was bothering me. Needless to say, I felt hopeless.

After the completion of my undergrad degree, I continue to perform piano and taught music in the public schools. I was still faced with the same issue because the computer was inevitable. I took a break for two years to allow my hand to heal. My hands felt better, so I went back to school for my masters. Gradually the tendonitis came back and I couldn't complete the degree because I was unable to finish writing my master thesis paper. I hired people to type for me while I dictate to them. It was very difficult to concentrate, inconvenient, and costly. While sharing my problems with my classmate, she suggested to me that I use a speaking software, and said that Dragon NaturallySpeaking was the best in the market. I was very reluctant to try it because I speak English as a secondary language, and I doubted that the software will work well for me. It wasn't until I met a professor who was handicapped and have lost both arms using this software so proficiently, that I decided to buy the software. The software was kind of expensive to me because I was a student, but I was in desperate need of a solution to finish my thesis. Dragon NaturallySpeaking software version 5 was my first try. I spent time training and learning the program patiently. I graduated a semester later because it took me time to finish my thesis paper of 125 pages, but I was glad that my best companion “dragon” did not let me down. If I wish I had discover it sooner.

Besides the fact that the software helped save my academic life, it also improves my professional and personal life. Although, the software has gotten used to my accent and could even write my name correctly, a very unique French name; my English accent has improved a lot. I wanted to pronounce words correctly instead of training the software with incorrect diction all the time. I purchased a speaking dictionary to help me with pronunciation of words, and at times, I type a word and have the software to read it back to me. I know my accent had improved because people understand me a lot clearer. The playback and text to speech features help me to edit my papers (I could hear where punctuation is needed), and I review my notes while doing other things and so forth. I also plan to use it in French, but for now the English is perfect. Furthermore, I was able to train the software to write in dialect like “Creole”. Pretty amazing! I used it at work and any time I want to use the computer.

Thanks to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I am back to school for a last time for a doctoral degree in music education at the University of Georgia. And this time, I added the transcribing feature using a digital recorder. I can study anywhere that I want to and transcribe my notes later. I also recorded my classes; unfortunately the transcription does not work well for that. I look into purchasing a Bluetooth microphone set to give me more flexibility. Lastly, when I tell people about the Dragon NaturallySpeaking, they quickly refer to the speaking software which comes with their computer. I usually tell them that I have been using this software for a long time and find it very reliable. If they try it they may be more satisfied than I am, since I still have an accent, but it is indeed faster than writing or typing. Certainly, my rating of the software is very excellent. Keep up the good work!

Talk to the dragon!

For our 12 year old son, school was a nightmare. His Aspergers made the work tedious, his dyslexia was frustrating, and his dysgraphia made handwriting extremely difficult and exhausting. According to him, it was torture every day until he met the Dragon. He had seen me using my Dragon 5 and was fascinated by sound turning to text, but it wasn't appropriate for a child to use... then, Dragon 9 came out and it sounded perfect! It took a bit of practice and he was frustrated when the dragon didn't understand him. He even was heard reprimanding the dragon for making mistakes! Soon, however, he and the Dragon became fast friends. Sometimes they would play too much and Alex enjoyed tricking the Dragon with sound effects.

It's now almost 4 years later and Alex and the Dragon are still friends. Alex has been able to write wonderfully imaginative stories with the help of the Dragon, as well as, complete other academic projects in high school.

Now, he and the Dragon talk often which allows his ideas to be communicated more effectively so that the true Alex shines through. Thank you Dragon!

English is my Passion, Dragon is my Success

Living with chronic pain is not easy, and it is because of the chronic pain that I chose to be an English major. When I started to choose a career, little did I know I would fall in love with writing and enjoy every minute of the literature classes. It only took two consecutive exams for me to realize that I had chosen the best area of study, I absolutely loved writing those essays, but my hands were less than thrilled. It caused my fibromyalgia to flare and I lost the use my hands for a short time.

I scheduled a meeting with the director of the disability department because I was worried that since I could not write essays or take tests I was going to have to change my major – although, to what I did not know. She immediately told me about Dragon NaturallySpeaking and I was shocked to learn that there was an easy fix to my problem. Thankfully, I had scholarship money to use to buy the program and I immediately started training the program. To my surprise, I found that writing essays using voice recognition software did not require much more time than typing and I continued to get A’s on my papers. My mother tried to type as I dictated but she was unable to keep up with my fast dictations the way the Dragon program can; it also took much longer because she is not trained for that job.

Whenever I tell some one that I talk to my computer and it does what I say, they give me an inquisitive look but are intrigued by the possibility of this technology. My most frequent use of Dragon is to write papers, but when the dexterity of my hands is severely impaired I use it to search the Internet and create presentations. Without Dragon I would not be able to pursue my dreams of professional writing nor finishing my degree with high grades; I am so grateful for this technology.

I originally purchased Dragon because I was having trouble with Rheumatoid Arthritis and my job involves a lot of typing. It has been incredibly helpful in productivity.

My son is a very bright young man, but was having a lot of trouble completing written assignments in elementary school. I spoke with a friend, who is his school psychologist, and she asked why Brent wasn't using my Dragon program since his thoughts were coming along much faster than his ability to write them down. Since he is a total "technology freak," I was pretty sure he would enjoy working this way. Not only did he enjoy it, but for the first time ever he is excited about writing and his English grades went up considerably.

I usually do not write product testimonials, but our family is so very happy with this program and thankful the technology is available!

The Dragon Final

"Yeah?"

The Proctor towered over me in the classroom doorway, eyeing me and the laptop bag slung over my shoulder.

"Can I use my computer for the final?" I asked meekly.

"Where's your blue book?" he asked. "My instructions say no one takes the final without a blue book."

"This is my blue book," I said shrugging the shoulder carrying the laptop, "I use my computer and --"

"A. Blue. Book." He repeated again, grabbing the door to shut it in my face.

"Wait!" I thrust my foot in the door as I fumbled in the bag for my headset, waving it in front of him. "I don't keyboard, I don't use my hands at all -- I "talk" to the computer, you know -- voice recognition?"

"Oh," the light dawned. "You use Dragon?" He pulls the door open, "why didn't you say that? Here -- give me your computer. Where's your extension cord? "

Okay, so I should've prepared the University before I walked into my Marketing 360 final and sprung it on them I wasn't going to use a blue book, I plan to "talk" my way through a two-hour final exam. Give me a break -- it's been over 20 years since I took a college exam, and even more years since I was Ms. Oliniski's top student in ninth grade typing.

My typing days -- and keyboarding, too-- are long gone because of chronic repetitive motion injuries. Probably you're not keyboarding, either. Like you, I knew I'd better find a way to maneuver around the keyboard world to keep moving ahead. Like you, the key to my success is Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

I'd mastered Dragon at work, and decided to move ahead with my dream to pursue a master's degree. That's how I found myself back in the classroom preparing to take the seven-essay final. In two hours. Under the best conditions I quail under pressure -- and now? I have to “talk" through a final? Can I do it?

Seated in the back of the classroom, I read the first question. "Create a marketing plan for Apex Financial Services. Be sure to include the company's positioning relative to its competitors. Outline all phases of the strategy."

I took a deep breath, adjusted my headset, and began to speak. And my words leapt onto the page: with Dragon, I found my voice.

Two hours later, while my younger classmates were shaking out cramped hands and passing in scrawl-filled blue books, I spell checked and printed three single-spaced pages and handed them in.

I hope Ms. Oliniski would be proud that I received an A on the final. I know I was. Thank you, Dragon, for setting me free to succeed in my studies and career. With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, we can go anywhere.

Dragon Naturally Speaking makes grading writing and research papers a cinch!

Dragon Naturally Speaking is my Official Teaching Assistant. I teach writing and research on both the graduate and undergraduate levels. For years I would make corrections by writing between the lines, around the side, top, and bottom of the page, crossing over, crossing out, and trying my best to help my students become better, more effective writers. Some of the more challenging papers ended up looking like Etch-a-Sketch rejects. Nevertheless, I plodded on, doing my best to help my students do their best.

The I met my Official Teaching Assistant - Dragon Naturally Speaking! First, she rather timidly assisted me with writing my personal letters. Then, because I am also an attorney, she boldly helped me draft legal pleadings. We go way back, so I have not-so-fond memories of lengthy learning curves. I had to spend a good amount of time training my Assistant to understand my speech. I must admit that I laid her off for a while, until I learned that she had mended her ways, and had advanced to the point where there no learning curve is needed at all. In her latest versions, she understands me completely. She let me know that she was now ready to help me tackle those pesky student papers.

She suggested that I require that my students submit electronic versions of their papers, using in-text, MLA style reference notes, so that we can make our corrections with footnotes. Using Dragon Naturally Speaking, I insert a footnote where a comment is needed. Now I am able to dictate to my Assistant, as I wax eloquently through corrections and comments on how papers can be improved. My students are happy because they do not have to strain their necks and eyes trying to read my chicken scratch. I am much happier because my Assistant helps to make me a better professor, which makes my students better.

My daughter speaks Dragon

My beautiful daughter, Sara, now 13, was diagnosed at age 7 with a rare, degenerative, neurological condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Type 8. One of the symptoms is an intention tremor affecting her fine motor skills, which makes writing extremely difficult, and causes fatigue. Having this physical disability resulted in her placement in the Special Education program at school, where her peers, or an assigned aide would write for her. At home, she would dictate to me and I would write out all her homework. This went on for several years. Finally, in order to gain some independence, the Special Education caseworker assigned to address her orthopedic needs, provided her with a laptop computer that had Dragon Naturally Speaking installed. She also has a tremor in her voice so training and adaptation were a challenge for her, but her persistence paid off. During her Junior High school years, she was able to complete homework writing assignments by herself, with Dragon. At her 8th grade promotion ceremony, she proudly wore a medal awarded to her for attaining straight A's in English during her entire time in Junior High. Now she's off to High School, and of course, Dragon is going with her!

Improved My Students' Education and Saved Me Time

Before using Dragon's Naturally Speaking, it would take me 30-40 minutes to grade a student's essay, and even then I still had to leave a lot of feedback out because of time restrictions. However, after I started using Dragon I found that I can dictate my comments directly into a student's digital essay, integrating with the word processor's "comments" feature. I have also set up shortcuts for frequently-used comments so I can speak a short statement and Dragon will place a larger, more detailed statement that I have prewritten into the paper. I have found that I can leave even more detailed feedback for my students using these methods and do it in only 20 minutes. This has greatly improved the level of writing instruction my students receive while saving me a great deal of much-needed time, which is always a challenge for composition instructors.

I returned to college to become a teacher after many years in the automotive repair industry. I experienced difficulity with typing all the English essays that were assigned. I could not type fast; only at a slow pace (only 7wpm with errors) my frustration level rose rapidly, this caused extreme distress and trauma to occur because of all the essays that were required weekly and their length of 2-4 pages. After a month of sheer pain and struggle with the teachers, essays and note taking I was exhausted, frustrated and ready to quit. Then I found Dragon Naturally Speaking and thought it proably would not work because it sounded to good. I made several inquires about Dragon and thought it at least had to be better than what I was accomplishing. I installed Dragon, trained it and then thought I would try it on the next essay. WOW!! it not only worked it exceded every expectation imaginable. After my first essay i was hooked and proceded to use Dragon on everything I could. My grades shot up, the teachers were impressed with how perfect each essay turned out, no mistakes, puncuation, spelling tabs everything perfect. I graduated with a 3.86 GPA with no stress, no trauma and with lots of sleep. Dragon Naturally speaking walked across the stage with me because i would not have succeded with out it. I am now a certified Special Education Teacher and I recommend Dragon Naturally Speaking to all of my students who have difficulity writing. I still have my version 7, but I am considering upgrading because I understand the newer version is far superior. I find that hard to believe that anything could out do itself but I firmly believe if it can be done Dragon Did It. I have told all my associates at school about the ease, functionability and speed at which they can complete lesson plans, letters, memo's or notifications with Dragon, in a nutshell Wonderfully Superior.

Time is Important

For years I have given tips to my doctoral students on how and and why to use the Dragon. Many of my colleagues began using it when writing textbooks. My own use-both professionally and personally - is simple, yet using the Dragon has made more efficient use of my time. When writing for research, it is easier to read from the articles, journals and texts I may want to use use later on. I place each piece in a folder for a given topic - then when I need it, I not only cut and paste, but the page numbers, author and other information is there so I don't spend extra time going back to find my references. At times, when an idea hits me, I can't always stop what I'm doing for long periods, so I go into the Dragon and tell the Dragon my thoughts.. Later I can revisit the folder and add to or subtract from what I was thinking, without trying to decipher my handwriting.These methods have allowed me to become more proficient and have given me the ability to keep track of thoughts before it is too late.

Dragon Naturally speaking, now that I am retiring will be a big help as I begin to write a book I have in mind for my grand daughter. Now only if the Dragon would learn to draw!

grading papers

I use the dragon to correct college student assignments. It allows me to quickly address corrections and recommendations to the writer in a comfortable and easy manner. The reaction from the students is that they seem to think I am talking to them instead of using very brief messages that are not very candid or in any detail. I can add enormous detail very easily. When correcting papers one tends to use very limited explanations to the writer, but with dragon one can easily explain complex ideas and elaborate issues very easily. Using it along the Microsoft check tracker, the statement dictated stand out in any color you like. I have influenced many faculty to use it and especially those that are doing research and writing books.

In 58 years old it was not an easy decision to go back to college to get my Masters degree. Since my graduation with an undergraduate degree in 1973, I've always had a secretary or an administrator. Consequently I never developed typing skills. My Masters degree revolves around human resources/change management, and leadership skills. There seems to be a lot of report writing in this curriculum. In December of 2008 I broke my wrist severely, and although is not on my writing in it did have an impact because of the amount of typing that was required. I purchased Dragon Naturally Speaking Version 10, and with minimal training I was able to successfully use this program. It has been invaluable resource for me.
