According to Microsoft documentation, in order for a software vendor to use the phrase ‘Works with Vista’ – “Applications must be tested on Windows Vista Release Candidate software or later. *The application must be tested on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista.*”

I am very disappointed with Nuance, and will continue to spread bad words about them until these problems with their systems are fixed.

I agree with everything that Larry said, and a useless 50$ program that I can't use due to a lack of support for actual paying customers.

I hope that Nuance is happy after cheating hundreds of people out of fifty bucks, and not even giving a visible warning that the program was not compatible with 64 bit OSs.

I had previously heard that Nuance was a good company, and that Dragon was the best Speech-to-Text program available. Now I realize differently that they are a corrupt, cheap, organization that only cares about money without giving a thought to their customers.

I will continue to spread this bad word about Nuance until a Essentials update is available.

So I called the toll free number and was told to look for it at the end of May, or possibly mid-May.

Is there a more reliable estimate as to the release date of Legal 10.1? Will it be downloadable, or will we have to order the DVD?

I have waited several months for this and may just start using Vista's speech recognition and forego any further speech recognition purchases from Nuance. Typing is too painful and I have put off authoring some briefs until now with the hope that the Legal version would be out as of today.

I agree that there is occasionally confusion about the differences between the various editions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, particularly Essentials ($49 suggested retail price) and Standard ($99 suggested retail price). Dragon NaturallySpeaking Essentials is an entry-level speech recognition tool designed for the “casual user,” and only sold through the mass merchant channel. Since Essentials is a product for basic speech recognition tasks, here are some additional “Fun Facts” about Essentials that explain why we encourage Essentials users to take advantage of our promotional offer to upgrade to Dragon NaturallySpeaking Standard 10.1 or Preferred 10.1.

Upgrading to Standard (or higher editions) will:

•	Improve Accuracy: Dragon Standard allows customers to use the Acoustic Optimizer. What does this mean? As you make and train corrections and perform additional training, Dragon stores the acoustic data in an archive and uses it to enhance recognition accuracy over time. Dragon Standard also allows users to take advantage of the "add contacts from email" functionality. This tool allows users to add the names of people to whom you have sent email to your Dragon vocabulary. More importantly, the tool actually detects the names of your contacts and offers them to you. You can also have Dragon scan the contents of your sent email and adapt the language model to more accurately recognize your writing style.

•	Improve Email Experience – Dragon Standard delivers enhanced command and control functionality for Microsoft Outlook Express. This means that customers can use more voice commands to control Outlook Express rather than being forced to manually navigate menus or click the mouse to perform tasks (beyond basic dictation) within the application, or use DragonPad.

•	Improve Word Processing Experience – Dragon Standard allows Natural Language Commands and increased compatibility for Microsoft Word (the most commonly used application for Dragon) and WordPerfect (another popular word processing application). Instead of requiring users to memorize a specific command, such as "bold that," Natural Language Commands recognize a wide variety of ways in which a user may issue a command. "Make that bold," "Bold the last paragraph," "Set font bold" will all accomplish the same task, as will many more conversational commands. Dragon Standard recognizes hundreds of ways in which a person could issue a command; however, the user only needs to say what comes naturally.

•	Improve Usability – Dragon Standard includes a detailed product tutorial. While we try to make our products as easy as possible to use, the tutorial provides tips and tricks that help users become more familiar with Dragon and how it works.

As a whole, these additional features will provide Essentials users with increased accuracy and ease of use, particularly in word processing and email applications.

We’ve tried to be as upfront as possible with customers as we re-engineered Dragon to install and run on the Vista 64-bit operating system. Our upgrade decisions are based on customer needs, and we found that the user demand for 64-bit support is low within some areas of our customer base worldwide. In the case of Essentials, this is a low-cost product that is primarily built for the 32-bit operating environment. Contrary to Larry’s opinion, we value all Dragon customers, regardless of the specific edition of the product they’re using. We encourage customers who have any questions about the differences between the various editions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking or would like an explanation of our Vista 64-bit upgrade policies to contact Nuance customer service (a free call) at 800-654-1187. We’re happy to answer any specific questions from customers and help you select the best speech recognition product for your individual needs.
