Dragon Dictate for Mac is here!

We're heading into Fall this year with an exciting announcement for Mac users - Dragon Dictate for Mac is here!

A little history: For a number of years, MacSpeech leveraged the Dragon speech recognition engine to power the popular MacSpeech Dictate application.  Earlier this year, Nuance acquired MacSpeech and welcomed Dictate as an official member of the Dragon family.  Since that time, we've been working hard to bring our PC and Mac products closer together, so that we can offer the accuracy and feature set that our Dragon NaturallySpeaking customers have come to rely on for the PC, and still maintain the important, native Mac elements of Dictate that Mac users expect.

Dragon Dictate for Mac is the first major Mac product release from the new Dragon family and, perhaps most exciting, the first to leverage the new Dragon 11 engine (just released at the end of July), resulting in a big accuracy and performance boost over MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.  Dragon Dictate for Mac offers a more streamlined set-up, revamped Mac user interface, and dynamic new voice commands for dictation, editing, navigation and proofreading. Dragon Dictate for Mac also “learns” better than any previous version of Dictate, responds faster to spoken commands and supports Dragon Voice Shortcuts for searching the web, email and Mac desktop by voice.

You’ll find more information about Dragon Dictate for Mac, including promotional pricing, at www.nuance.com/dragon/mac.

And the full press release announcing our new family member is right here - http://www.nuance.com/company/news-room/press-releases/NC_007231.

Happy Monday!

Thanks,

This is awesome news!  I bought it and downloaded it last night.  It is a tremendous improvement and I'm looking forward to digging in on all of the new features.

This update seems to put Dictate on par with Dragon Naturally Speaking for Windows (if that's what the Windows version is still called....)

Earl, Sorry to hear about your trouble. I will have our customer service team manager reach out to you to help address your issue.

Can you please provide me with an email address we can reach you at.

The upgrade option on the webpage does not seem to be working. I have v1.5.9 MacSpeech Dictate - when I try to upgrade - to upgrade version appears that can be selected and purchased for download. Please sort this out. Thanks. asim

I want to use this software with first to fourth graders. Is there some voice training materials that would easy for students to read? Is there a way to write your own voice training materials for young students.

Can I crossgrade from Naturally Speaking 10 to Dictate 2.0 for Mac?  I currently run NS10 using parallels on my mac.

I bought and downloaded Dragon for Mac's yesterday, and I did the training etc. It replaced my MacSpeech dictate which I have been using a lot and with great success for two years.

But today, I've had multiple crashes and it seems to not want to open up at all.

Here is my email:

Does it do mouse clicks? Eg can you say “mouse click” (or something like that) and the mouse will click at the current position of the cursor. This used to be an add-in pack for the old iListen. In MacDictate, you had to code this feature using some extensions (but it worked really well when you did). So I am wondering if the new Dragon version has this feature out of the box?

@cm - yes - it does mouse clicks!

I upgraded from MacSpeech to Dragon Dictate two days ago. I have spent a number of hours simply trying to create a profile. Now, the application crashes upon opening repeatedly. I've tried to install and use both on Intel MacBook 2009 and older iMac (2006) both running OS 10.6.4. Same problem. In addition, I have uninstalled MacSpeech Dictate, and am now unable to reinstall even though I have original app and data disks. What's up?

Hi Peter,

hm, stay tuned? I don't want to hesitate to switch from MacSpeech Dictate International to Dragon Dictate 2.0 (english-only) for a while. But I'm not sure if there is an upgrade path?

If I upgrade now, is it possible to switch to the international version afterwards?

Best regards, Herm.

Hi Herm -

We are not planning an upgrade path from English 2.0 to International 2.0.  My recommendation would be to wait for the International 2.0 release if that is the product that you need.

I'm needing to transcribe the audio track from Final Cut Pro files. Will Dragon Dictate do that? Do I need to convert to audio files? Do I need to run it in FCP while another Mac uses DD? I see where the MacScribe software will transcribe audio files, but I'm not clear as to whether the new Dragon Dictate also incorporates those features.

Peter Mahoney wrote re: Dragon Dictate for Mac is here!
on 09-28-2010 5:12 PM

Hi lbcsusan -

Scribe can convert recorded audio, but only if the speaker on the audio has a trained user profile.  If you have more than one voice, a voice without a profile or a voice that has other sounds in the file, then it will not work.

Beware!!  I upgraded from the most recent version of MacSpeech Dictate to Dragon Dictate.  Worked really nicely until i restarted and then Dragon Dictate just constantly crashes off right after starting up.  I should have checked the forums... i am not alone sadly - there are lots and lots with the same types of problem.  12 hours now and no response from the service desk.  If you are thinking of upgrading, it might be better to wait till you see the forum activity calming down.

I have been using Dragon on my Mac and have been a Dragon user for years. I tried Mac speech and was disappointed. Does this version of dragon dictate work similar to Dragon for Windows, that is select text features corrections etc? If I purchase/upgrade my dictate program will I see a similar interface to Dragon for Windows now on the mac side? If so I am in! If now I will continue the fusion route...

The Dictate interface is still different from the Dragon NaturallySpeaking interface for Windows.  The products are coming closer together, but they are still somewhat different.  The text selection features are now very similar to what you use in Windows

I'm having crashing problems too in version 2.0.1. Not so much with the program itself, which is an improvement on MacSpeech, but its tendency to bring down other programs like Preview which is normally very stable.

Dragon Dictate 2.0 doesn't transcribe audio files, but you can use MacSpeech Scribe for that purpose

And why do none of the US versions of any Nuance Software let you dictate in a foreign language other than spanish of course.

The world does not revolve around english and spanish only.

Despite it being nearly four months old, there is still no version that is sociable with FileMaker pro. The current version of Dragon dictate and FileMaker pro for some reason cause the CPU to become completely overloaded.

It is impossible to use both programs at the same time.

When is the next version of Dragon dictate going to be made available that fixes this bug?

I just purchased Dragon Dictate 2.0 for Mac after having used Naturally Speaking 11 for PC for several months. It seems pretty good, but there doesn't seem to be a backspace command. Is that the case? If so, why?

David Popovitch wrote re: Dragon Dictate for Mac is here!

Use the voice command "Scratch that" or "Delete that" to delete your last utterance.

Use the voice command "Delete <text>" where <text> is a single word, multiple contiguous words or a range of words using the convention "<first word> To/Through <last word>"

Or use the key command "Press the Key Delete" to execute a single character delete or 'backspace'
