Dragon and Windows 7

The newest version of the Windows operating system, Windows 7, was released to manufacturing last week, with general retail availability expected in October. Nuance performed preliminary testing on the release candidate of Windows 7 and found that Dragon installed and ran on this operating system with no major issues.  Our preliminary testing of the release candidate of Windows 7 included both English and Spanish.

So for anyone who is wondering if Dragon will run on Windows 7, the short answer is yes. But there is some fine print you should keep in mind: Although Windows 7 may include some new features and functionality, these items have not been reviewed and tested within Nuance labs. You should also note that we tested the "release candidate" so additional testing will be necessary when Windows 7 is formally released as Microsoft may have made changes to the final version of the release that may impact compatibility with Dragon.

I've been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 10.1 on my three home computers and all of them have been running Windows 7 RC since it first came out.  Thus far it has been running extremely well . . . the only thing I've noticed is that the installation seems to take forever compared to what it did on XP.

Keep up the good work!

I have just tried to run Dragon 9.5 on windows 7 and it keeps giving errors.  It will not run in compatibility mode either.

Hi DS -

Dragon 9.5 is not supported on Windows 7.  If you want to run in Windows 7, you will need to upgrade to Dragon 10.1

If you are in the market for new hardware or software and you want to know it will work well with Windows 7, look for the Compatible with Windows 7 Logo.

Installation of Dragon Speak 10 on Windows 7 RC x64 crashed OS and I was forced to go back to backup as system restore did not correct the problem.

The problem uccured when C++ 2008 Redistributables file was updating, I ran into this issue once before with a Logitech C++ Redistributables update with Windows 7 RC, they resolved the problem in the next update and everything was peachy.

Leary about installing again until some work is done to make DS more compatable, instead of just "basic regression testing".

I am a developer and I was very exited to start working with this software. I guess I will wait and see what Nuance does with Win7

I tried to migrate from Windos Vista (64 bit) to Windows 7.. worked great - jut one exception: Dragon! This did not work at all, even the unintall did not work (asking me for serial, hardware fingerprit etc)....

I`d strongly recommend using it on Win7, I have to choose between the operating system and Dragon, it seems.

Dragon 10.2 will install on Win 7 and will run with the Dragon Pad but will only run on Wordperfect X4 or MS Office 2007 if I use the Vista SP2 compatibility mode. I think Nuance have some work to do.

Installing DNS 10 on Windows 7 (64 bit) I am prompted to install C++ runtime. I say OK and it tells me C++ runtime is not compilable with 64 bit. I tried running the installation anyway, but it tells me it must have C++ runtime. Any suggestions?

I Just bought DNS a year ago and now I am forced to buy It again for windows 7 (I think Not)! Window 7 has a free built in voice recognition Software and it seems to work just fine. I would suggest trying it out first before forking out an other $200,

Peter Mahoney wrote re: Dragon and Windows 7

Hi Steve - we offer a free upgrade to 10.1 for our Dragon 10 customers.  Dragon 10 was launched in July of 2008, so it has been a while since Dragon 9 has been available.

There are some good deals out there for Dragon 10 upgrades, but if the built-in speech in Windows 7 is good enough for your purposes, you can certainly use the functionality.

Thanks for the feedback

So, I have been a DNS 9.0 user for nearly 2.5 years now and just because my Windows XP computer died and now that I have a Windows 7 computer I have to buy an upgrade to DNS 10?  I don't know which company I am more disgusted by... Nuance or Microsoft.  So much for backward compatibility on MS part and so much for supporting legacy programs on yours.  Oh and BTW... it would seem that almost every review of DNS 10 says stick with DNS 9 because DNS 10 is junk... but now I have to upgrade. Fabulous.

Is that correct ?

I am having issues with Dragon professional version 11 and Windows 7.  When I try to reopen a profile that I created or imported, I received a message saying "user files you have selected cannot be accessed. This could be because you do not have sufficient privileges to use it or because it is currently being accessed by another program."

I followed the instructions on dragons FAQ but it did not help.

I worked with my IT to get all permissions so I do not believe it is a privileges issue but rather some type of renaming bug. For example, if I have a profile that I name JAWS, it automatically renames itself JAWS_DrgRenamed_DrgRenamed... ... over and over again.

I found that if I rename the profile, I can usually open it eventually. But that is not a good solution. Any ideas?
