In addition to running on 32-bit operating systems, Dragon is now available within a Vista 64-bit environment. Customers using many of the latest laptops and desktop PCs that ship with the Vista 64-bit operating system can install and run Dragon in the same manner as other operating systems. See Peter's FAQ (and other posts) for questions about 64-bit compatibility.

Dictation and voice commands make it faster and easier to use the Web

In addition to Internet Explorer 6 and 7, customers can now use full Dragon functionality in Internet Explorer 8. This includes the ability to dictate text and use a range of natural language voice commands to conveniently navigate Web pages. In Internet Explorer 8, customers can also leverage Dragon Voice Shortcuts for quick and easy Web search using commands such as “Search the Web for financial management resources” or “Search maps for Italian restaurants in Boston.”

Enhanced Documentation

Improved documentation, Help files and Tutorials help to make Dragon easier to set up and use

A newly developed Commands Quick Reference sheet highlighting the most useful and most popular voice commands is now posted on the Nuance Web site and is included on the version 10.1 DVD. The online Help, which includes reference material, trouble-shooting information and step-by-step procedures, has been updated to support new features and clarify key topics. In addition, the tutorial delivers enhanced navigation capabilities, as well as more details and tips about product features.

Upgrade from Version 8, 9 and 10

Dragon version 10.1 will install over version 8, version 9 and version 10

Existing Dragon customers can upgrade to Dragon 10.1 from version 8, version 9 and version 10.0. User profiles created in previous versions of Dragon can be opened in Dragon 10.1, with all customizations preserved.

Service Pack 1 Updates

Version 10.1 includes new features and enhancements introduced within Service Pack 1

All enhancements included with Dragon 10 Service Pack 1, launched in February 2009, are included in Dragon 10.1. Specific functionality includes the ability to disable some of the new Quick Voice Formatting commands (cut/delete and copy), improved ability to anchor the Results box, improved correction handling, refinements to the Accuracy Tuning and Data Collection features, and improved number formatting. In addition, the ability to use Dragon commands effectively within Lotus Notes 8 has been improved.

Hi Jesse -

As long as the computer meets the minimum specifications, it should be fine.  We haven't tested 100% of the computers out there, but I don't know of any instances where we have a specific model that is not supported.

Are there any particular brands of laptops that have been shown to be incompatible with DNS for any hardware reasons?

Dragon Naturally Speaking version 9

This is the worst product for any one with a English accent. I tried 7 and 9 and they don't work. I returned 9 after a few days and stated it never worked and Nuance never bothered to follow up or investigate what the issues were. I don't recommend at all

If I purchase the DNS 10, what would it take to upgrade to 10.1?

I'm using 10.1 on Windows Ver 7, but I see they still haven't corrected the fact that to have a number rather than written out you have to say "spell" first and then digit you want as a number. If there's a way to fix that, please contact me at, Ken Smith expert@theSouth.net

Also seems a bit slower than 10.0, perhaps I need to train it more, and perhaps 10% less accurate at this time.

There is a very clear succesful improvment of the Dragon 10  over previous versio9ns. I am very excited about trying the 10.1.

Can DNS 10 work with multiple monitors (extended desktop) yet ?

Currently (9.5), commands like 'mouse grid window' get lost after the selection.

Hi ffisher612,

Re> How does Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 compare with MacSpeech Dictate 1.3?  .... They're both Nuance products... I want to upgrade...

First, an important correction: MacSpeech isn't a Nuance product. It is published by MacSpeech, Inc. See www.macspeech.com.

Macspeech licensed the Dragon speech recognition for use in Dictate - like an "Intel Inside" for speech recognition - and they produced a great speech recognition product for Mac users.

How does it compare to Dragon? I've tried it and the recognition, being the Dragon engine, is just like Dragon unsurprisingly enough! The user interface is a little different from Dragon and you may miss some features there if you've been using Dragon previously.

You'll appreciate that Nuance doesn't offer an upgrade to MacSpeech's product - it's not ours to offer!

Best regards,

Derek

How does Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 compare with MacSpeech Dictate 1.3?  They're both Nuance products.  I'm currently using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.5 on an iMac and want to upgrade to one of the new versions.

Hi BigSteve,

Re> One of the missing functionalities in earlier versions of DNS was the ability to break out the context from your web browser... Does DNS 10.1 have this improved functionality?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was seeking some expert information - which I haven't managed to get but let me try and see how we go. Others with Dragon scripting skills - please chime in!

There isn't a specific "tell me what the curent web page" command in Dragon scripting that I can find. However, there may well be an external call you can make so that your browser will tell you directly where you are.

Alternately, you can set a command to operate in a context based on the name of the current window. In some circumstances, this may be sufficient for requirements.

A possibly more reliable approach is to use WIN 32 APIs to get the value of the current window. Larry Allen presents a technique for doing this in my copy of Scripting for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8. The syntax is still correct for v10.

Thanks for your question. I'll pass it on to the product team for further comment and action.

Best regards,

Derek

Hi Peter:

Thank you for your blog. May I request a topic about the testing process upon which Nuance's digital voice recorder and microphone recommendations are based?  For example the Sony recorder that Nuance considers as the most accurate is not equally regarded in most other forums. Such a topic would not only be very useful, but would likely also encourage some very interesting (hopefully intellectual) discourse!

BigSteve wrote re: What's New in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1?

One of the missing functionalities in earlier versions of DNS was the ability to break out the context from your web browser. Many applications now use a web based front end/client so you need to be able to create commands against specific URL patterns rather than just iE or FireFox.

Does DNS 10.1 have this improved functionality ?
