As a Quick Update on Dragon for Vista 64

As I suspected, there has been an amazing amount of interest from this community about support for Dragon on Vista 64. In a previous blog post, I provided some information about why Dragon does not currently work on Vista 64 and stated our commitment to releasing a version of Dragon 10 that would work on 64-bit versions of Vista.

Over the past month or so, we have been testing the beta version of Dragon 10.1 internally, with our partners, and with many customers. Among our testers, we invited about 100 consumers who expressed concerns about a lack of 64 bit support for Dragon 10 to participate in the beta program. So far, the feedback has been very positive. As is typical with this kind of release, we identified some issues with the software that are being fixed and validated right now (that's why we do this kind of testing program...).

We're feeling very good about the quality of the release and expect to finish our fixing and testing in the next few days. Based on our standard quality assurance and release process, we will have Version 10.1 available by the end of the month.

Thank you for your continued interest and feel free to chime in with your comments.

When will UK medical 10 have a 10.1 version that can be used with Vista 64? When windows 7 comes out will UK medical be able to run on the 64 bit version.

Why does this stop in March 2009?  I have just stupidly bought the software for my new Vista 64 system and found it completely impossible to download.  Has everyone given up or is it really going to be possible to use this software?

Nuance website shows  info "English Dragon Medical 10.1 Not available as a download" . What exactly that means - will be available or have to call Nuance to get CD/DVD shipped to me.

Did I see the Nuance web page say that Dragon Medical supported Vista 64 and now it does not?

We need Vista 64 for Dragon Medical very soon.

My Dragon Dictate 10.1 download  for vista 64 crashes the whole operating system, when the dialog box asks for first dictation vocabulary setup. In spite of coordination with technical support and multiple reinstalls  on a Dell Precision M6400 quad core 12gb ram, and they say no one else has this problem. I just uninstalled it as I cannot take the time.

Does anyone else experience this and have a suggestion?

By the way, I had a major problem with SP1 and had to do a complete un install, I have a link for a different SP1 but I lack the confidence to install it!  What I found interesting was a salesmen called trying to sell me the wireless headset ... after telling him I had two Calypso headsets I told him about my issues with SP1 ... he incorrectly told me that SP1 was the 64 bit update!

It's not Nuance that everybody should be mad at .... It's Microsoft, they are the ones that painted themselves into a corner with an OS that can't run 32 bit software natively on their 64 bit OS ... something that doesn't seem to be a problem on a Mac!  They are the ones that screwed everybody!

Just got DNS Professional upgrade for DNS Pro 9.  I made the switch because I have VISTA 64-bit and I have been unable to install DNS 9.5 on my computer.  When you come out with DNS 64-bit version 10.x, how will you know to send me the professional version?  Is it worth my while to continue buying the professional version?  I have been with Dragon Pro since version 5.

I have managed to install Dragon 7 professional on my Vista Ultimate laptop which must be running 64 bit version so eagerly awaiting 10.1 but wondering whether I will ever be able to install without paying a lot more money as I have an upgrade to 9 from 7 and that will not install.

Received an e-mail today from Nuance offering me the chance to buy the 64-bit version of DNS10. Website shows its still not out yet.

Is it available or not? And if so, where can we long-suffering users download it from?

I'm with all the other long-time uses of DNS who now own Vista 64-bit laptops.  DNS 10 Preferred was sold to me by an over-enthusiastic agent who assured me blandly it would work with 64-bit (unlike DNS 9).

This afternoon I got a call from another similarly over-enthusiastic agent trying to sell me some wireless headset who also assured me blandly that Nuance would now distribute a download version tha works with Vista 64-bit -- all I had to do was call and chat with Support.

Well, I did that and learned maybe next month sometime I might get an email letting me know about maybe how it might happen. . . .

Like the others, I'll bite again and again on the promise to get a really effective voice-recognition program.  Clearly, the MS VR program ain't it!

I'm one of the people who volunteered to test the beta version but wasn't chosen.  I'm handicapped and depend on Dragon, but my new computer is 64bit so I'm stuck using my old laptop.  I'm so excited to hear that the new version is about to come out!  I also like the new Blogs for users - all fantastic ideas.

KM wrote re: As a Quick Update on Dragon for Vista 64

I need to read closer, but just excited. SO, I bought DNS10 thinking it would work on my Vista system, not realizing won't work on Vista64 bit. Will I be able to register the number online, then upgrade to the compatible version? I'm assuming that since it will be a complete NEW install, that we will be able to access that after complete registration and upgrade. Old disc of course doesn't work at all (I'm miffed, but patiently and excitedly waiting). I have disabled kiddos who can talk, but not manually type well at all. I'm VERY excited to see how the 10.1 version works (after paying for DSN10 and waiting...). Hoo-ah, y'all! Keep up the good customer service and excellent products! ;)

I'm glad everyone is so excited about the 64 bit version, so am I but as a person with a disability who NEEDS this software I feel cheated out of months of work.  I relied on the fact that it said Vista Windows and there was nothing to indicate that 64 bit was not compatible.  If I new this I would have looked for a version 9 at the time, now I'm stuck until this ever a waiting update comes.  I doubt it will be here by the end of March as Nuance claims.  Perhaps March 2010.

It looks like a lot of us bought laptops with Vista x64. The prices are almost irrestible these days. Many came with an EISA partition rather than the Vista CDs that have  both 32bit and 64bit versions. Mine had the EISA partition with only x64. I am pleased to hear that a version that will run on Vista x64 is almost out. Now if you can produce a version of DNS for my Blackberry Curve that would be great. Try typing on one of those. I'll settle for the x64 vista version for now.

Hi Peter:

Maybe Nuance could polish its image by temporarily providing lower-end Vista-64 versions (e.g. standard, preferred, ...) to the higher-end version customers (Professional, Legal, ...) while these latter customers impatiently wait for the support to which they may feel more entitled.  After all, these customers paid Nuance extra for more feature-rich and expensive programs.  Most would probably opt to wait, but the gesture alone might be appreciated.

I am 54, with physical limitations and depend on Dragon to assist me in writing a book . Not being completely computer literate, i hired a highly trained computer technician to install the program Dragon 10 and uninstall the previous edition. after trying unsuccessfully, himself for a period of time, he had to go to another appointment. I hired another guy who spent literally hours on the phone with customer support who had him try everything in the book, still no luck. Why did not someone tell him straight up that it was incompatible with Vista. Some of the expense I expected for having someone install for me, but it seems ridiculous that I paid for wasted hours on hold with Nuance support and so many attempts that did not work. This has cost me a ridiculous amount of money. Do you offer any compensation or a consolation prize? Seriously, Jeanne

Peter - I for one am just grateful that you are releasing an update, and responding to your customers.

For those others that are complaining, just stop - it doesn't speed up the process, and doesn't encourage Nuance either.

Let's just be grateful that our wait will soon be over, and we can go back to using a solid product agian.

Hi Mr. Thau -

I got both your comments, and I posted both of them as soon as I could review them.  I am not censoring negative comments about Dragon - only profanity and SPAM (so far, I have approved 100% of the comments).

I know that many people were frustrated because of the lack of Vista 64 support,  I can assure you that we are not in the business of holding back software from customers who are willing to pay for it - our shareholders certainly wouldn't like that!

We are very excited that we are about to release support for Vista 64 and we hope our customers can get value from that new capability.

There may be a little lag in response to postings because (so far) I am responding to 100% of these comments myself.

Thanks for your patience!

Archangel wrote re: As a Quick Update on Dragon for Vista 64

64-bit support is absolutely essential!!

Current version of Dragon is useless to me - all my PCs (even my notebook) have 4GB or more of RAM and thus require Vista 64.

A huge # of PCs coming off the line are shipping with Vista 64 so they can use 4+ GB of RAM.  Dragon is at least a year behind the demand curve.

I bought Dragon based on it's statement that it supported Windows Vista - there was no specific exclusion noted at the time that only Vista 32 was supported.  After I got the SW, of course it wouldn't install.  Contacting support I got the smart aleck answer that "well it didn't say it supported Vista 64" when a rational person would presume that when it says Windows Vista without indicating only Vista 32 means it supports all versions of Vista.  I couldn't get a refund and the support person was just a smart ass.

So hopefully they'll offer a free upgrade to the 64-bit version when/if they finally ship it (assuming a competitor doesn't come out with a comparable 64-bit version first)!

Mr. Mahoney,

Please do not censor non-profane comments which criticized Nuance more vigorously that you would like.  I submitted a perfectly truthful and appropriate comment today which was suppressed from your blog.

I repeat its jist.  Nuance has been selling Dragon 10 under false pretenses, without disclosing that it would not work with 64bit and continued to do so with e-mail and postal mailings even after I complained in writing to Nuance directly.

I suggested therefore  (in my suppressed comment) and repeat here that the defrauded 64bit customers might well consider complaining to the authorities that Nuance should be investigated and perhaps prosecuted for mail and wire fraud.

if this legitimate comment from a victim customer (expensive DNS 10 legal) is once again suppressed, I intend to publish elsewhere not only my underlying complaint but also that Nuance runs a dishonest blog to avoid criticism which it considers too damaging.

Have been waiting for this release for over a year.  I've signed petitions, called customer service numerous times, it has been an adventure.  I did not read the previous blog as to why it took a year to develop a 64-bit version, but it must have been major.  We have developed countless programs in the same time frame, so it's interesting that it takes a year to make an already existing product 64-bit ready.

My father has Parkinsons and has trouble typing. He got a new laptop and I bought  him an updated version of DragonSpeak last Father's Day. It took him a couple of weeks till he got around to taking it out of the box and a bit more to get going on the install.  By the time he installed it it was 31 days past the purchase date and we learned that DragonSpeak doesn't install on a 64 bit system. I called customer support for him and they said because we were past 30 days they couldn't help us, but not to worry because the 64 bit version was about to come out.  That placated us.  A few months later we contacted again and they said the release date had been pushed back to November, then December and eventually they told us they were no

longer sure what the release date would be (or if it would come out) but they apologized. This has been a very disappointing experience we have had with Nuance.  They should have taken the product back once they acknowledged the release date was

no longer November, especially since that was part of the explanation they gave us when they wouldn't take the product back on day 31.

many users are bilingual (at least). Probalbly any retired people who have no company to purchase the program (international) would like to install the prefered english version for day to day use, and a second version on the same computer to communicate with others, i.e Dragon French Standard. I am being selfish here. Why can't dragon come up with a simple system where this switch of version can be done at will on the same machine.

Seems easy in theory. With the great  number of foreigners, or naturalized citizens surrounded by colonials with a strange accent, i would think this market is wide enougth. Am I dreaming? So far. Nuance says keep dreaming!

Trying to install the original software, configuring/authorizing it then SP1?; or

Trying to install the original software, immediately install SP1, then configuring/authorizing it?; or

Install SP1 immediately and use serial number for authorization?

When will 10.1 32 bit and 64 bit versions be available for Enterprise Medical version 10?

Hi Angela,

Thanks for your question. This upgrade will be available to existing Dragon 10 users as a free download.

I hope that helps!

Peter

I thought I saw this question before... but here it goes again! Is this upgrade for the Vista 64 bit going to cost those of us who already have Dragon 10 (standard in my case)?

Very glad to hear that x64 support is nigh. All my primary machines are x64, and I've been waiting for the day DNS10 was released, which was also the day I discovered I couldn't use DNS10.
